Doyung Lee

Storyboard Track – 2023

Doyung Lee was born in Korea and lived in Japan for the first 6 years of his life, where he biked amongst nature in a rural town with a particle accelerator (imagine a summery, not-creepy version of Stranger Things). Sure, he enjoyed drawing more than most kids, but young Doyung had a wide collection of interests: opening the spiky pods of a chestnut with his shoes, catching tiny fish by the river with a bucket, or even waiting patiently for school to end every day!

Such a prolific set of skills sent Doyung to the Big Leagues – his family moved to suburban Maryland (a place in the USA). His first impressions were the roads being too big, the pizza being too salty, and the sushi being made all wrong. These changes would have been complicated enough, but he now had 3 half-learned languages colliding in his brain. Consequently, Doyung found communicating with people through words difficult. Thankfully, he found he could connect with people through laughter and drawing! He journeyed through the US public school system holding onto these two lifelines.

As an adult, Doyung trekked a winding path that led him to collaborate and work with engineers, lawyers, designers, teachers, and librarians. While he learned so much from each of those experiences, he always felt out of place and constantly found himself returning to laughter and drawing as tools for connection. On one fateful day in 2020, Doyung decided it was finally time to find his people, who he secretly knew deep down were artists. He took online classes for storyboarding, joined mentorship programs, and to his joy, found people who also took circuitous journeys into Animation!

He is immensely grateful to be a part of this program and hopes to weave all his past threads into something new and exciting at Nickelodeon!
