Hannah Suria is a writer and performer from Orange County, CA, but please, don’t hold that against her. She comes from a very loud, very mixed family (a shockingly blonde mixed mom born in Singapore and a Tamil-Sri Lankan father from Malaysia) and is the oldest of three siblings. While she begged for sisters growing up, she credits her brothers with teaching her how to be funny and encouraging her love of making people laugh.
Immediately after high school, Hannah helped her immigrant parents realize their worst nightmare when she decided to move halfway around the world to pursue a career in the arts (in fairness, they were shockingly cool about it). Fulfilling a lifelong dream of her own, she moved to England where she earned her bachelor’s degree from the London School of Film, Media and Performance at Regent’s University. The experience of living abroad in one of the most diverse cities in the world took her already unique perspective to another level. It also makes her insufferable anytime anyone brings up London but hey, she earned it. Go ahead, ask her the best way to Richmond from Regent’s Park!
Returning from England with a degree, a husband, and an affinity for pronouncing the second ‘a’ in ‘caramel’, Hannah, like every other girl who got the lead in their high-school musical, moved to Los Angeles to act. But she was quick to discover roles for women who looked like her were few and far between, so she began to write. While it started as a way to give herself the funniest dialogue, writing quickly became a passion of hers, all its own. From entering competitions, film festivals, play festivals, ghost-writing for others, tackling sketch comedy, writing stopped being a hobby and became an integral part of her life. Especially when dealing with the aftermath of her youngest brother’s unexpected passing.
Hannah has always had a deep and profound love of television and growing up with little to no media representation (at least portrayals that weren’t offensive), it’s something she’s extremely passionate about bringing to future generations. Her dream is to help represent mixed kids with unique backgrounds and overloaded eldest daughters, with humor and heart.
